History of New College AFC

New college has a well-earned reputation as being one of the stronger colleges in the Slaughter and May league in recent years, despite this they have only won Cuppers twice, in 1883-4 and 1912-3. Probably New's best season in recent years was the 2002/03 season when they won the Premier division helped by the firepower of fresher Luther Sullivan (who scored the winner in the Varsity match two seasons later). As is often the case, the following year was a disappointment for the men in red and black as relegation followed, however, New bounced straight back earning promotion after finishing as runners-up to Pembroke in 2004/05. In the same year, New came close to winning the Cuppers trophy for the first time in 91 years losing 3-1 in the final to Balliol, although the disappointment was tempered by the knowledge they would be replacing their Cuppers conquerors in the Premier Division in 2005/06. A season of consolidation and a 5th place finish in the Premier Division followed and then, last year, New piled the pressure on Worcester in the league, finishing second with Worcester only confirming their championship in the final week of the season. The season for New hinged on 3 games against Worcester, unfortunately for New, Worcester won both the home and away league games and knocked New out of Cuppers in the quarter finals - if the results had been slightly different the current champions of college football would be New.
